Associate Teaching – Guiding you into a teaching career

While we all know about traditional education schools and alternative credentialing programs, there is another, less-understood route into teaching careers that deserves a spotlight. A lot of the higher quality independent and private schools, including many of those that host Breakthrough sites, have what are called “Associate” or “Assistant” teaching programs. They like to have two teachers in their classrooms (sometimes in the younger grades, sometimes school-wide) to allow for more one-on-one support of students. The younger, less experienced Associates are able to work full time in a classroom under the guidance of excellent teachers. While the Breakthrough teacher set sometimes takes issue with the idea of working in an independent/private school, there is a genuine benefit in seeing what great classroom teaching looks like. Strong independent schools actually do all the things you’ve heard about in your education classes – small class sizes, differentiated curriculum, critical thinking, teaching for comprehension (as opposed for test-taking).

I actually followed up my undergraduate Breakthrough experience with a job as an Associate Teacher at San Francisco Day School. In my time with my 4th graders (now in 7th and 8th grade, and all taller than me), I became more hopeful about the education system, sure that you can change lives in the classroom. Moreover, I was able to ease into the field, responsible for a percentage of the teaching, while receiving constant, full-time mentoring. I recommend this path to many of you.

SF Day is now taking applications for Associate Teachers, inviting you to join the line of Breakthrough alums in that corps.

See the job, nicely forwarded from Breakthrough director Nicole Michna, after the jump.

The Associate Teacher Program provides an opportunity for beginning teachers to start their teaching careers in a collaborative, co-teaching environment. Whereas the Teaching Intern assists in the daily working of the classroom, the Associate Teacher is responsible for all aspects of teaching, in the classroom and beyond, and also benefits from a Head Teacher’s guidance and mentorship.

The philosophy of the Associate Teacher program is twofold, designed to support students and to develop teachers’ skills, knowledge and abilities. First, in order to best serve our students, teachers differentiate instruction to address the needs of the many different kinds of learners. Associate Teachers will plan and execute, in a collaborative way, a differentiated curriculum in all areas. Second, San Francisco Day School values its teachers and wishes to create a dynamic, collaborative, enriching teaching experience that supports teachers at all stages of their career. We do this by having a multi-tiered teaching structure: Teaching Interns, Associate Teachers and Head Teachers. With all three levels at any given grade level, there are exciting mentoring and learning opportunities for all teachers.

Associate Teacher responsibilities include:

* Designing, teaching and evaluating curricular units
* Creating lessons that include differentiated instruction for diverse learners
* Developing units based on own particular areas of interest and expertise
* Communicating regularly with parents, including leading Parent Teacher Conferences
* Coordinating and participating in field trips and the Outdoor Education Program
* Writing student evaluations
* Assuming responsibility for classroom set-up and classroom management structure
* Assuming share of responsibility for lunch and playground, dismissal and arrival duties
* Attending weekly faculty meetings and faculty in-service days.
* Attending various school functions throughout the year including parent potluck dinners, performing arts programs, field days, and evening events.

Yearly contracts for Associate Teachers will begin mid-August of each school year . A New Teachers’ Orientation, required for all teachers new to San Francisco Day School, will be held the week before full faculty meetings begin. Associate Teachers will also attend a Faculty Retreat with the permanent faculty and administrators.

An Associate Teacher must be committed to a career in teaching, and have a minimum of two years experience in a classroom; for example as a Teacher, an Intern or a Student Teacher. A teaching credential is preferred. Candidates must also possess an interest in a communicative, collaborative environment, where feedback and mentoring are important components.

San Francisco Day School is an independent, co-ed day school serving approximately 400 students in grades K-8.
